Project 365 8-11-2010 Geekin’ Out!

I made this today:

That’s my Scott Pilgrim avatar.  I have totally bought into the hype.

Well, I guess not totally because I haven’t bought any of the comics, but I liked the avatar thing.

Tonight I celebrated an area of my geeky-ness with Dean and a couple new friends.  I have many different geek sides:

  • There’s my Dungeons & Dragons side – I prefer to play a cleric.
  • There’s my table top gaming side – Warhammer 40k primarily & I stick mainly to the Games Workshop line of games even though it’s been years since I’ve actually fielded an army.
  • There’s my music geek side – It’s hard to stump me when it comes to song names and the bands who performed them.
  • There’s my sci-fi world knowledge – movies & TV shows mostly with the occasional book world thrown in.

But the side that got it all started, the side that I found interesting as a concept and not just as a play idea, was comic books.  I mentioned in an earlier BLOG about my first issue of Iron Man and how it got me started on the Golden Avenger and that interest hasn’t really waned since 1983.  Even when I was bitter and not collecting I still peeked at issues out of the corner of my eye.

Tonight my comic side was indulged as we geeked out about comics, storylines, movies and T.V. shows that were all about super heroes and the books they were drawn from.  This culminated in going through Dean’s long boxes and remembering the good ol’ days of the late 80’s and early 90’s before Image came – before the dark times.

You’d think that my picture today would be of our comic book archeology.  You’d probably think that it would be grate to have an image or two of the rare comics in Dean’s collection – some of which I had never seen before in person – or of the signed issues by very famous and infamous creators, but no:

Today’s picture is of Dean’s sink after we covered it with anti-ant & roach powder.

It looks like Tony Montana sneezed on his counter top.

See you tomorrow!

Project 365 5-9-2010 Mother’s Day! Again! And Iron Man 2! Again!

Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there!  Hope it was wonderful.  Rene and I spent the day with her family which includes her parents and her brother and sister-in-law and the nieces.  There was a tremendous amount of food to keep with the tradition of moms stuffing their children full, but I’m rushing this part because it’s family stuff.  If you had a good time with your mom and family then you know how our day went and there really isn’t any new ground to cover on that.  Although we did make Shrinky Dinks, and I’m pretty sure that it makes our day just a bit more fun.  Here’s a picture:

I also had my second viewing of Iron Man 2, this time with Rene.  I feel like this movie is going to benefit from distance and multiple viewings.  Because of the speed of the dialogue and the amount of material that they shoved in this movie seeing it a second time allowed me to catch things that I missed before, like the self tanner all over Sam Rockwell’s hands, which I thought was a particularly fun touch.

See you tomorrow!

Project 365 5-7-2010 Recovery

Recovery – Something you do after you give up addiction, something you do after surgery, and something I do after seeing a midnight screening of Iron Man 2.  I sat in front of the computer today like a zombie.  Calls were made, texts returned, emails read/sent, I even made it to a meeting, but I was far from 100% today.

I think the days of midnight movies – especially double features – no matter how much fanboy love I may have for the movie’s subject – may be coming to an end.  even as I write this it is almost midnight and I feel like I’m only awake because my body is too tired to sleep.

This is today’s picture:

You’d never know that I was barely functional, would you?

See you tomorrow.

Project 365 5-6-2010 Iron Man 2

Let me start this off by saying that this post is NOT an Iron Man 2 review.  It’s not.  I’m way too much of a fan, and I’ve only seen the movie once and it was the midnight showing so it is impossible for me to look at the movie as anything other than, “oh-my-god-iron-man-is-the-most-awesome-ever!!!!!111!!11!!!!!”  That being said this will be a discussion about the experience of going to see the midnight screening of Iron Man 2.

It was 9:15pm and I was already late.  Dean had been at the theater since 7pm waiting in line and I was teaching from 7-9 (8:45, really, since I took away the 15 minute break we usually take in the middle of class).  I was very grateful that he saved me a seat and I did my best to stumble to it without making too much of a fuss for the other viewers.  Seeing the first movie again, with digital projection, in a room full of happy fans was a great way to start off the night.  Even though media is changing over to on-demand home presentations there is something about the theater going experience that can’t be replicated at home, especially when it’s a movie that you really like!  I was decked out in my classic Iron Man t-shirt and definitely ready to get my geek on.

There was a trivia contest between movies.  It started as I was in the lobby getting a hot dog, popcorn and a Cherry Coke.   I came back and Dean was like, “Dude, they’re giving away posters.”  And I was like, “Awesome!  I got this.”

Question #1:  How many years was the first Iron Man movie in development?  Tough question.  I remember the first articles coming out in the early 90’s, I guessed ’92 so I said, “18 years!”

Wrong.

The correct answer?  17 years.  GAH!

Question #2:  What was the name of the terrorist organization that kidnaps Tony Stark in the first movie.  I got my hand up first and yelled,”The Ten Rings!”

The crowd may have teased me for my geek-aptitude, but in the end I walked away with a free poster.  Which happens to be today’s picture:

Then the beach balls started flying!  I don’t know that I’ll ever understand the attraction of beach balls in a large crowd, but the mob mentality can be addicting.  I was trying to eat a hot dog as the ball bounced around the room and there were more than a couple times when the ball just landed right in front of me.  I couldn’t reach it so the guy next to me had to get up to toss it back around.  The crowd boo’d but then a guy one row ahead of me stood up and said, “He’s trying to eat a hot dog!  Give him a break!”  Thus, my name for the rest of the night was “Hot Dog.”  The ball would flop down behind me, “It’s by Hot Dog!”  The ball fell next to me, “Ahhh, Hot Dog!”  It was the most attention I’ve ever received while eating a hot dog.

Then Iron Man 2 started!  I’ve read the reviews.  I’ve seen your complaints.  You are all wrong!  This movies was awesome and funny and awesome!  And I think I had a full geek-gasm when I saw the after credit sequence.  After I’ve seen it a second time I might be able to give a more impartial review, but for right now…

IRON MAN 2 RULES!

See you tomorrow!

Project 365 4-30-2010

As the week winds down, oddly enough to a rather dramatic business cliffhanger, there’s one thing two things dominating my mind.

One is this:

And the other is: Crap in a hat!  We’re supposed to be shooting Cheerleaders Must Die! soon!  Normally I wouldn’t even mention something like that in this blog, but the “date pressure” for the movie is heavier than the “date pressure” that I’ve felt for any wedding, even my own.

I’ve never been so excited for It’s been a long time since I’ve been this excited/nervous for a Monday.

See you tomorrow!

Iron Man Viral

ComiCon this year began the online viral campaigns of some of the big tent pole movies we expect in 2010.

This included Iron Man 2.

I visited the Stark Industries website and filled out their online job application. I did this because I’m a mega fan and feel condfident that good ol’ shell-head will never spam me. I have no idea what I signed up for but I got this email today:

“Hey there!

Thank you so much for being one of the first people to apply for a job at Stark Industries. So far, the response has been incredible. You are among the best and brightest and your interest in joining our ranks is truly appreciated.

Already we have an overwhelming number of applicants and we plan to take our time thoroughly investigating each one. It may be a long process, but it is the only way to ensure that we find the absolute best candidates to work at Stark Industries.

We will contact you soon as we narrow down our selection.

All the best,
Kay Baker”

As soon as I find out what this means I’ll let you know.

If I actually get a job at a fictional company that’d be cool.

If I actually get to do something cool that’s related to the movie I might pass out!

See you tomorrow!

Wolverine: Origins = Disappointing

Yesterday I wasted $11 at the movies seeing Wolverine: Origins. I want my $11 back. The movie overall was not horrible, it was a passable movie shot on cameras and performed by professional actors. The performances were very capable and I really liked Liv Schreiber’s Sabretooth, Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool and Hugh Jackman continues to be a great Wolverine. The addition of Gambit was interesting – albeit short – and there were some great action moments. My biggest gripe is that this movie was disappointing. Chronically disappointing. Things would happen and get your expectations up and then the ball would be dropped right when you expect the payoff.
In this review I’m going to be revealing SPOILERS so if you plan to see the movie then don’t read on. Also, if you plan to see the film I’m sorry.
It is important to realize that I am a comic book guy. I’ve followed Wolverine since the 80’s in his own series and in the X-Men. I’ve read the back issues including his earliest appearances and, although I have not read the Origins limited series, I am quite adept at using Wikipedia and have caught up on the details that surround his life. I have read the amazing Weapon X series that was done by Barry Windsor Smith in it’s original release in Marvel Comics Presents and, although I completely checked out in the 90’s (when comics went to shit) I have seen some good story points come out of those times. I know his continuity and have a respect for the wonderful stories that have been told with this character. I had an expectation that Marvel and Fox would have at least shown similar respect.
I was wrong.
I did not expect the same kind of attention to detail that we got from Watchmen, and I know that movie continuity gets to be different, but the writing on this film – or at least what was released – was just irresponsible. There are many things that are left up in the air even in comic book continuity, so the idea that Wolverine and Sabretooth were brothers did not bother me, I could get on board for that, but I ask the question, “at what point did Sabretooth get all big and dumb, like he was in the first X-Men movie?” Liv Schreiber did a great job and I REALLY liked his portrayal of of the character, but it didn’t jive with, or was justified for, the X-Men movie that is supposed to take place after.

Also, Deadpool, a great character. A funny character. Ryan Reynolds does a GREAT job! The biggest problem? HE’S BARELY IN THE MOVIE! They were also a bit liberal with the powers he was granted by the Weapon X program. And where those powers came from. And who was trapped in the cages at the end!

GAH!

I’m just going to rant because I’m trying to be organized about this but I keep getting distracted by different things.

OK so where the hell is the actual Weapon X program? There wasn’t one. Wolverine was designated Weapon X, as in Weapon 10, meaning there were 9 before him. We still don’t know who they were although I think we were supposed to infer that they died.

When Wolverine’s skeleton is bonded with the adamantium I was totally on board. In the comics and X-Men 2 we are told that he went on a murder spree after the process was completed so when he woke up and started tearing shit up I was ready for a blood bath! Instead of a blood bath we ended up getting a pissed off killing machine… escaping and leaving all the people responsible for his condition, who would have been easy prey, alive and well and not even all that scared.

When Wolverine is hunted at the farm house and Agent Zero jumps onto the helicopter, the CGI of him making a completely unrealistic jump was actually better than the CGI of him running.

And does everyone who was a part of the Weapon X program have to die? Some of these characters are supposed to still be alive! They become important later!

The Blob’s power is that he can become unmovable. He’s not super strong! He’s not any more durable than any other heavy person.

Cyclops, Banshee, Emma Frost, Quicksilver, and the multi-dozen other characters that were in the cells at the end were not captured by the Weapon X program!

Silver Fox was not Emma Frost’s sister!

If Silver Fox could touch Stryker at any time and make him do whatever why didn’t she do it YEARS before she did?

How the hell did Quicksilver get caught?! His dad is Magneto! Magneto doesn’t even like his kids, but he certainly wouldn’t let them be captured!

The argument about whether or not adamantium can pierce adamantium has been debated for decades. I have been on both sides of this debate, but have landed on the side that adamatium, which is supposed to be the strongest metal on earth – nigh indestructible – should not be able to be pierced even by adamatium bullets. But that’s just me. Really I have nothing to back that up.

And why the hell did it take a bullet to the head for him to forget? The Bonding procedure was supposed to be so traumatic that it makes him go feral, and then the mental conditioning of the Weapon X program was supposed to fill in certain gaps, while erasing other memories. Instead he got out of the procedure fine and was having calm conversations hours later.

And why were the stakes so low? He was joking with Wraith as he was trying to find out about Stykers location, and then Blob is just hanging out even though Wraith left on bad terms?!!? Everyone was just a little too comfortable with the whole “we were in a covert strike team and now we’ve all left and seem just fine with it”.

Then when Wolverine does finally get to the island lab no one tries to stop him! Everyone involved with his capture, death of Silver Fox, Silver Fox herself, Sabretooth, all the doctors – they are all right there and what does he do after claiming he’s going to kill them all? He leaves! Walks away! And then when he comes back, sure Sabretooth fights him, but no one seems to care! No back up, no “oh hey, maybe we should see if Wolverine is still alive”, nothing!

And then he and Silver Fox can just walk RIGHT INTO the cells where they keep the mutant prisoners, which, by the way, some were frozen and some were not, and they can free them all before anyone does anything!

And Deadpool, I can get on board with teleportation. It was one of his powers in the books, kinda’, even though it was a little teleporter device and not an inborn or grafted power, but that’s like organic web-shooters on Spider-Man – I get that. However – LASER EYES?!!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! REALLY?!?!?!?!?!!!??

I felt better about Deadpool after finding the Deadpool after-credits button, but man, oh man the rest was rough.

I don’t even know what else to say. I wish I could claim this was a real review, but this went down the old rant highway a long time ago.

Given the great comic book movies that have come out in just the past year this film had a lot to live up to, and it was just disappointing. Maybe a few years ago it could have passed, but I think this is the first time time people have had big expectations for a comic book movie and it hasn’t been able to live up to them.

As you may have noticed my inner geek has gone totally fan-boy and I know many of these arguments don’t actually have much merit, but the movie just seemed so half assed that any little thing that stuck out to me as wrong was even more amplified.

Thank you for reading my rant. I hope you had fun even if you disagree.

I’m gonna’ go to bed.

See you tomorrow!
